Setting Up & Equipment

1. Create a clean, clear space!

Free of anything but the items that you’re using! Anything in the background or sides will distract from what you’re trying to show!

For non tabletop projects/ or side views of the process:

It’s best to have a white wall that is blank to film with especially for larger projects! The white wall will bounce light and help eliminate shadows! (Light colored walls will also work!)

Darker colored walls can be fun to use and add contrast but are oftentimes harder to light and eliminate shadows - so keep that in mind!

For tabletop projects: use a relatable surface:

Faux wood contact paper on foam core for a faux wood table, marble contact paper for a faux countertop, etc.

When buying contact paper it’s best to use contact paper that has a matte finish so the light doesn’t show up! If you can’t find matte you can use matte finish spray paint to tone down the shine!

Light wood works best to keep the video bright!

Keep your surface clean while filming & this background can last you years!

Of course if you have a wood table or countertop that can also work but again if it’s shiny it may be tricky to light!

2. ✨ Lighting is key ✨

Invest in two ring lights! This will allow you to light BOTH sides of your project.

While filming, spend time moving your lights around to eliminate shadows as much as possible. This will ensure that your videos are clean and the focus is on the process!

I suggest getting a large 18" ring light like this. (They often run sales on these too!)

Suggested equipment: using a camera other than your iPhone is not necessary, but will take your Reels to the next level!

I suggest the Canon M200 for beginners. You can adjust brightness, color, contrast, etc. all on the camera and it has a flip up screen built in so you can see exactly what you’re filming when you film it to ensure you’re happy with your footage!

You can also get a lens adapter to add different lenses on it!

Another item that isn’t necessary (but honestly game changing!) is an overhead table top mount. These make filming tabletop videos SO much easier!
