Setting Up Lighting & Cameras

Setting up a well-lit, clean filming space is key for a successful video. Begin your setup with an approved background for your video. This could be a natural fiber dropcloth, light wood, or light brown butcher/craft paper background is our standard. It is very important to keep clutter-free surfaces while filming. Cluttered surfaces will distract from your project and result in lower viewership.

Next, set up your lighting. We recommend that you use at least 1 artificial light source to achieve a bright, well-lit video. A ring light is a great option as it produces an even wash of light over a small area. Set this up in front of your table and angle it down towards your project. It is also best to film in a well-lit room so you can turn off any overhead lights that may disrupt your camera's settings.

Once you are ready to film, be sure to always keep the focus of your project on your hands. Only include your body in the frame if you’re filming a large project, like a porch arch or decorating a Christmas tree. Never stand and talk to the camera, you should always be filming yourself working.

To have any specific questions answered about your particular filming setup, schedule a 1 on 1 meeting with Kara- Kara@hometalk.com. Good luck filming!
